Job Description
Summary: The Academic Coordinator, Veterans Upward Bound Project will be responsible for implementing academic programs in required disciplines, providing an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) for each participant, coordinating testing services, providing quality instruction, monitoring student progress, coordinating advisement, and the supervision of lab and tutors. This position reports to the Project Director, Veterans Upward Bound Project.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares individualized instructional plans and materials based on participants' diagnosed/assessed academic needs.
- Supervises the day-to-day operations of the academic component in accordance with the regulations of the Department of Education and the College.
- Assists in preparing grant proposals.
- Assists in public relations and veteran recruiting efforts.
- Prepares progress reports on project participants.
- Plans and oversees academic year program services; evaluates and implements changes in services when necessary.
- Provides support, guidance, and direction to grant participants students in a variety of situations and environments.
- Advises veterans (prospective students) in the areas of admissions requirements, project requirements, admission status and the transfer of credit from other institutions.
- Interprets and applies College admissions standards and policies in determining student eligibility.
- Determines applicant eligibility through the interpretation and evaluation of test scores, previous education and assessment of applicant transfer credits; plus prior military experience in collaboration with the college Registrar/Admissions Office; recommends admission, rejection, or alternative action to requested project.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with students in the program.
- Responds to requests for information; assists students and staff with research, information verification, and problem solving.
- Maintains student academic files; monitors student progress and achievements; identifies academic and relationship problems; provides guidance and advice as warranted.
- Serves as liaison between students, faculty, and other support and resource staff to promote effective collaboration in support of academic success.
- Responsible for knowing and conforming to all safety practices and regulations that apply to this specific area and position. Unsafe conditions should be reported to the immediate supervisor and to the College Police Department/Public Safety.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Ability to appropriately recruit veterans and plan their educational program.
- Ability to accurately prepare, maintain, and present records, reports, and budgets in compliance with grant objectives.
- Ability to use critical thinking skills to organize and direct learning-centered activities and analyze and interpret information.
- Must be able to work in a flexible, individualized instructional setting, and develop and teach motivational and remedial/refresher classroom programs.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends, plus travel in-district and overnight.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in education, adult education or related field. Successful results of a criminal background check are required.

Pursuant to College policy, it is an employment eligibility requirement for an applicant to meet the requirements of § 435.04(2), Florida Statutes, related to background investigations. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved background check will be conducted on every successful candidate as a condition of employment, and any person who fails to disclose any adverse information contained in the background investigation at the time of submitting the employment application will be disqualified from employment.
